Buick Excelle is a compact sedan built by the joint venture of SAIC (Shanghai Auto) and General Motors (GM). A best seller in China, it is essentially a re-badged first-gen Daewoo Lacetti (J200). Since its first release on April 21, 2003, over 1.8 million units had been sold by the end of 2012. In the past ten years, the Excelle has received upgrades several times– in both styling and powertrain–without being re-designed, retaining the 2600mm wheelbase.
There had been two variants of the Excelle: the hatchback version, called Excelle HRV and introduced in 2003, and the wagon, launched in late 2005. Shanghai-GM stopped making both in 2009.
Based on the platform of Buick Excelle another GM venture in China, the SGMW, has manufactured the Baojun 630 in Liuzhou, Guangxi.
It should be noted that the Excelle is not related to the Buick Excelle XT hatchback and GT sedan built also by Shanghai GM. The latter two are derived from the fourth-gen Opel Astra (Buick Verano).
In 2013, with 296,183 sales, the Excelle was the third most popular passenger cars in China, following Volkswagen Lavida and Wuling Hongguang. In 2014, 293,098 deliveries were recorded. Due strong sales, Shanghai-GM dropped its original plan to terminate the production of Excelle around 2012.
